We all have a tendency to rely heavily on our thinking minds when we are struggling, but in doing so, we often get caught in a fruitless search that neglects the wisdom inherent in our whole being. Making art allows us to creatively experience life with all of our senses. The body stores and processes meaning as much the mind does, yet we tend to neglect, negate, and even fear these valuable inner resources.
You need not be an artist, or even creative to benefit from art therapy. Expressing oneself creatively can relieve stress, increase joy and relaxation, and bridge gaps between the right and left brain to increase coherence between mind and body. Making art can allow one to “see” a problem from “the outside,” or from a different perspective, and to experience a situation from a felt-sense of knowing.
